The plateaux is the transitional stage leading into the highlands, consisting of relatively smooth terrain that is elevated well above the neighboring area, occasionally with multiple flanks of precipitous slopes. Big horn sheep, Mule deer, antelope, and numerous rodents adorn these lands.
